The Flamework of Robert Mickelsen
Robert Mickelsen’s unique, organic approach to flameworked glass has been pivotal in the evolution of torchwork. His large vessels typically include several different sections that are both hot- and cold-worked, and then assembled in the flame. His latest interest has been Graal, a surface decoration technique that enables him to put images on a piece by creating a layered and colored blank, applying a photoresist, and sandblasting away layers to achieve imagery.

Also look for Glass Talk with Dale Smeltzer in an interview with Henry Grimmett of Glass Alchemy, Ltd., who shares some of the basic scientific principles that are behind the way gases interact in the flame and the basic makeup of different types of glass. You’ll find additional information on the differences in torchworking with borosilicate versus soft glass in the In-Depth article, “Exploring the World of Borosilicate Flameworking” by Tom Wilson and R. Jason Howard.

You can find the rest of these articles in the Winter 2002 issue of Profitable Glass Quarterly.
