Profitable Glass Quarterly came into being through the guidance of its Editor in Chief, Maureen James, and her husband, Publisher, Steven James. Maureens experience as part of the staff at Standard Gravure, a subsidiary of the Courier-Journal in Louisville, Kentucky, and Stevens background in fine arts gave them invaluable experience that helped them to establish a firm foundation for PGQs older sister art glass periodical, Glass Patterns Quarterly.
Through the years since the inauguration of GPQ in the fall of 1985, Maureen talked with art glass professionals and discovered that they all expressed a desire to have a publication that would provide a vital resource for glass professionals. Research showed that there were few published materials related to the business side of art glass. In particular, there seemed to be a need for information that would help stained glass retailers. To meet that need, the initial Spring 1998 issue of Profitable Glass Quarterly was launched as a newsletter that was designed to help retail store owners sharpen their business skills while keeping them in touch with the latest innovations in the world of art glass.
After three issues in the newsletter format, the Winter 1998 issue of PGQ became a full-fledged magazine that has expanded to a sixty-plus-page publication dedicated to presenting inspiring stories of what other studio artists and retailers have learned about the art of growing their businesses. There is also always plenty of sound advise from experts in the areas of management, marketing, and personal development to help PGQ readers learn how to turn a better profit, encourage employees to improve their skills and give their best to customers, organize their businesses, and discover inventive new ideas for making an art glass business grow. Add to those features up-to-the-minute technical advise for taking the mystery out of electronic advances and the Web that will introduce you to practical ways for keeping track of inventory, advertising, and customers, and we think you will find that PGQ has a lot to offer to help you make your business run more efficiently.
We at Profitable Glass Quarterly strive to make this publication the best resource available to you, the art glass professional, and we look forward to bringing many more top-quality articles over the years to those who are looking for ways to improve their business skills and increase profits, while providing their customers with expert service that will keep them coming back again and again. We hope youll join us on that journey.
